What authors want from publishers


Ahead of our International Publishing Forum the IPG teamed up with The Empowered Author to survey authors on their relationships with independent publishers. The full findings are available to members now, but here are ten of the key numbers from the report.


Of authors either found lots of information that they didn’t trust before they got published, or thought information was confusing and hard to find.


Didn’t feel confident that they understood how publishing would work.


Didn’t understand exactly what was expected of them in the publishing process, especially in marketing.


Were consulted about publicity and marketing plans for their most recent books. 


Of authors use Twitter to personally promote books. There is also widespread use of Facebook (62%) and Instagram (45%). 


Have received resources to help them promote their books.


Think their royalty statements are clear and easy to understand. 


Get at least monthly contact from their publisher.


Average score of the extent to which authors’ expectations of being published have been met, on a scale of 1 (not at all) to 5 (completely), 


Of authors feel very or quite loyal towards their publishers.
