2 What services or products do you offer?

Haremi helps publishing companies to create educational content. That could be anything from helping with your research and concept development through to the practicalities of commissioning and managing authors. We also offer a comprehensive editorial and instructional design service, including typesetting, for print, and the production and testing of digital resources. We can even offer post-publication support for your customers. As far as we know, Haremi was the first supplier based in the UK to offer all of the services and skills required when creating educational content. Over recent years, most of our customers have been utilising Haremi’s ability to offer services for both print and digital products; having one point of contact to develop a ‘blend’ of resources makes life much easier for our customers and gives them confidence that all their resources are being developed to complement each other.We are very proud of our 100% customer retention rate—every customer we have worked with since Haremi was founded more than 12 years ago has asked to work with us again.

3 How can you help IPG members?

Most publishing companies face challenges somewhere in their development processes:- Sometimes they don’t know what to do, so are looking for ideas.- Sometimes they know what to do, but don’t know how to do it.- Sometimes they know what to do and how to do it, but they don’t have enough time or resource to do it themselves. Haremi can help you with any of the above! Irrespective of how we work together, our skilled team will help your products succeed by ensuring they are of the appropriate quality and have the edge over your competitors.Our work with large corporate publishers has given us unique insight into the most effective and efficient processes, so we can analyse how we work on projects, and advise on the best way forward.This year, we are very proud to be putting something back into the publishing community by sponsoring the Digital Publishing Award at the IPG’s Independent Publishing Awards. 4 What do you enjoy about working in publishing?

We love being able to help people (and their companies). Even though we are a business-to-business company, we treat any relationship on a person-to-person basis. Haremi is the largest UK-based company working with a wide range of educational businesses to create great content. We use our experience and expertise to provide a proactive, partnership-based approach to content development solutions. We enjoy working on a wide variety of subjects and seeing the positive impact that the products we create have on teachers and learners, from primary right through to higher education and professional qualifications. Every single student leaving the UK education system today will have used at least one of the products Haremi has created (that’s ‘why’ we do what we do!).

5 What do you think is the single biggest opportunity and the single biggest threat for independent publishers right now?

The biggest opportunity for independent publishers is to exploit the gaps left by the larger, more corporate publishers, and to react to market opportunities more quickly than their process-driven peers.Independent publishers have more freedom to develop innovative and creative solutions that fit perfectly with their customers’ requirements—and in an educational context, there is the opportunity to make more of a difference to learning outcomes (which really resonates with Haremi). The biggest threat for independent publishers is related to customers and the costs involved in finding market opportunities and making people aware of their products. In an educational context, large corporate publishers dominate some markets and it can be very difficult to break in with a niche product, even though it may be a better solution.

6 What do you want to get out of belonging to the IPG?

Making new connections and expanding our service offering to publishers that we haven’t worked with before. We are really looking forward to meeting new people—we are constantly amazed by the levels of creativity and innovation shown by independent publishers.
