Brexit and publishing: new resources

As we reach the end of 2019 we could be forgiven for thinking we’ve heard enough about Brexit. We are not much nearer knowing how or when the UK will leave the European Union than we were at the start of the year—and now we have a General Election to get through before there’s a chance of more clarity.

This is all causing a lot of uncertainty for businesses—and many IPG members have noted in recent months that it’s hard to do much firm planning around Brexit when you don’t know what it is you are planning for. But that shouldn’t stop us from trying to think about potential scenarios and work out ways to mitigate worst-case consequences.

To help, and with the support of the government’s Brexit Readiness Fund, we’ve been producing some new resources that gather advice from publishing, supply chain and legal experts. None of them claim to have all the answers about how Brexit will affect publishing, but they have been able to set out best guesses on how it might change imports, exports, rights, data, tax and more.

Over the last few weeks our experts have been answering publishers’ queries on these and other subjects, and their responses are collated. On 31 October—Brexit Day, or not, as it turned out—they joined us for an excellent webinar that was very well received by those who tuned in live. If you missed it you can now watch a replay on the IPG Skills Hub. An audio-only version of the webinar is also available as an edition of the IPG Podcast.

We’ll continue to provide as much help around Brexit as we can over the next few months, and to update our current resources. Please feel free to contact us with any queries or resources that you have found useful and might like to share with IPG members.
