The Independent Publishers Guild

The Independent Publishers Guild (IPG) is the UK’s largest trade association for publishers. We have more than 600 members working right across publishing, including in trade, children’s, educational, academic, professional and specialist sectors. They share annual turnover of more than £1.1bn, and are among the world’s most creative, innovative and dynamic publishers.

Here’s what we provide.

Community

The IPG is a diverse and friendly network in which independent publishers can share advice and friendship. In challenging times, the exchange of expertise is invaluable.

Training and mentoring

We help members become even more professional publishers via the IPG Skills Hub, an online portal training of more than 100 resources. Publishers can use it to polish their skills in many different aspects of publishing, and pick up practical tips from experts. We also run a mentoring programme that connects people who are new to the industry with experienced professionals for invaluable guidance.

Events

The IPG’s events are among the most popular in publishing. Our two-day Spring Conference and one-day Autumn Conference bring people together to discuss big publishing issues and share inspiration and practical information to take back to their businesses.

We run smaller seminars, networking events, meetings with retailers and Special Interest Group dinners for different sectors of publishing, as well as the Independent Publishing Awards—our annual celebration of independents’ achievements. In 2020 our big events have shifted very successfully to online environments, connecting and inspiring publishers at a time when they need it the most. You can get a taste of our online Conferences in this short video. Our next big event is the IPG Autumn Conference on Wednesday 21 October 2020.

Support for international sales

The IPG’s audience is increasingly international, and we connect UK publishers with partners around the world via our events and collective stands at the London and Frankfurt Book Fairs. We are always pleased to discuss membership and promotional opportunities with international businesses.

Information

The IPG’s website is packed with information about publishing, and our weekly ebulletins update members on the latest news and developments across the sector.

Business advice

IPG members enjoy free access to a Business Support Helpline that offers expert advice on a range of topics including HR, law and tax. In recent weeks we’ve also been helping members find access to coronavirus-related business support via a directory of resources.

Special deals

IPG members get a range of discounts and special deals on essential publishing products and services. The money you save on a deal can pay for the cost of membership on its own!

Podcasts and blogs

The IPG Podcast covers topics right across the world of publishing with a variety of expert guests, while our blogs provide stimulating reading. You can browse our archive of Podcast episodes here.

Help with big industry issues

In recent months the IPG has been focused on some of publishing’s biggest challenges. Our new Sustainability Action Group brings publishers together to work out how to make our industry greener, while our Diversity and Inclusivity Action Group is exploring ways to make the industry more open and representative. Publishing has a long way to go on these issues, but we’re determined to help independents lead the way.

Representation

Independent publishers are stronger together. The IPG makes sure their voices are heard within government departments and cross-industry activities.
