The Role

Sweet Cherry Publishing is an award-winning independent children’s publisher based in Leicester. We are looking for a Head of Design to join our growing design team. Our ideal candidate will be detail-orientated and organised and have experience managing a design team and their work schedules. They will have excellent design skills and an awareness of current design trends in the children’s market.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Managing and leading a team of in-house designers and external freelancers
  • Ensuring all briefs, workflows and schedules are executed smoothly, and communicating delays clearly to the production manager and publisher
  • Leading informal 1x1s and formal reviews and appraisals with direct reports
  • Planning and leading weekly design team meetings
  • Managing an annual budget across multiple projects
  • Attending domestic and international meetings, external events and book fairs
  • Attending and contributing to senior management meetings
  • Creating and maintaining good working relationships with creative agencies and freelancers
  • Sourcing suitable illustrators/freelancers for projects
  • Manage and negotiate freelance contracts
  • Ensure that high levels of artworking are implemented across the department
  • Approving book files for print after the sign-off process
  • Ensuring that brand identity is implemented over all visual aspects of the company

Skills, Knowledge and Experience:

  • Meticulous attention to detail and exceptional spelling and grammar
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills
  • A strong, proven interest in children’s books and design
  • Senior Designer experience, with experience managing junior team members
  • Ability to manage a fast-paced team and offer training and support to junior designers
  • Ability to simultaneously manage multiple projects with varying deadlines
  • Proficiency and an excellent working knowledge of Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator and Acrobat PDF
  • Excellent working knowledge of MS Office, particularly Word and Excel
  • Passion and innovative approach for design
  • Ability to present ideas with confidence and conviction
  • Able to work to firm deadlines, sometimes under pressure, in a fast-paced environment

Term: Permanent, subject to a 6-month probationary period

Holiday: 20 days plus bank holidays
